The Season Of Giving: How FlipGivers Are Planning To Spend And Give This Holiday Season

Here at FlipGive, we believe in the power of sports. Not only are they a great way for young people to stay active and healthy both physically and mentally, they also serve as prime opportunities to develop other essential attributes such as resilience, patience and leadership. Unfortunately for many young athletes, COVID-19 made getting back on the ice difficult. Teams faced limited practice and game time, while some associations were completely shut down. In other cases, families struggled to gather enough funds to keep their kids in the sport they love due to circumstances completely out of their control. For these very reasons, we teamed up with Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and Olympic gold medalist Cammi Granato to let young girls know that we’ve got their back. The Cammi Granato Girls Hockey Grant, now in its second year, has given girls the opportunity to gear up once again and inspire the next generation of future legends. With over 600 applicants from across North America, choosing grant winners was incredibly difficult. The stories we read were nothing short of moving and both FlipGive and Cammi Granato want to thank everyone for sharing their experiences with us. Because of this, we exceeded our initial goal of 42 grants and were able to issue $500 grants to a total of 100 girls! In addition to the grants, 42 equipment packages will also be generously donated to associations in need to help future players for many years to come thanks to the support of the NHL, NHLPA, Bauer and Pure Hockey. GET INSPIRED BY GRANT RECIPIENTS' STORIES Rylie M. (13, San Diego Angels Hockey) In 2018, Rylie was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder and anxiety. She tends to struggle with interacting, but playing hockey has helped her emotionally. Last year, Rylie was asked to play for the 13U Girls Hi-Chew team at Narch. Being new to ice hockey, this brought her and her family great pride, and she has continued to develop a new sense of confidence through the amazing power of sports. Aubrey L. (12, Hopkins-Park Hockey Association) Hockey has brought Aubrey such purpose being the only player of color on her travel team. In fact, Aubrey, her sister and best friends were inspired to start the Hockey Niñas, who partnered with Minnesota Unbounded to start their very first tournament hockey team with all players and coaches of color. They have 31 girls, all players representing 14 hockey associations all over the Metro area. Growing up in a single parent household, Aubrey feels a connection to girls in a similar situation and wants to grow the game for under-represented and at-risk communities. Indira E. (14, Hockey Brandon) As a self driven Métis youth, Indira has been a dedicated player who has gained leadership and strong sportsmanship from the game of hockey. It has empowered her with confidence and skills that can be demonstrated in all aspects of her life. She tries to be a good mentor for others and enjoys volunteering with younger groups beginning hockey. Lauren D. (6, Ohio Sled Hockey) At just 6 years old, Lauren is the only girl under 18 on her sled hockey team, showing incredible maturity and strength for such a young athlete. Despite the high cost of sports jeopardizing her ability to attend out-of-town tournaments, she knows she can overcome any obstacle, physical or mental and treats every game with the same level of passion. Above all else, she loves knowing other kids with Spina Bifida and inspiring them to dream big like her. Danica S. (15, Mississauga Ringette) Danica has a learning disability related to reading and writing, but sports has provided her with a place where she can shine. Playing ringette, and now hockey, has helped Danica learn skills to be confident and successful in school as well. She hopes to inspire other girls, which is why she donates used equipment to her association so that girls who are new to the goalie position can try it out without worrying about the hefty cost.
