Team Highlight: Girls in Sport

What’s inspiring to us is the stories that we see every day of teams who have grown together, and the positive impact that has in the community over the long term. The values of teamwork, community, and fair play are reinforced and we’re proud to play a part in making that possible.

The benefits of sport, especially for girls, has been widely documented. Girls who play youth sports are more successful in school and have higher confidence. Here are some of the teams we work with, and what they had to say about the effects they see.

CYO Falcons

Brantford CYO Girls House League is a grassroots, recreational program that focuses on the skill development and empowerment of youth between the ages of 4 and 15 years old. It’s truly a community, involving over 300 players and volunteers.

It’s great for their mind, body, and spirit,” says Paula, one of the many members who are involved with supporting the organization. “It really boosts their confidence and self-esteem.”

Sport develops a community, and to see the impact of a group this size the impact is truly amazing.

Badger Lightening

The Badgers are a high school team that has been playing together since the third grade. Being a girl's hockey team, they have faced challenges throughout their time playing together, especially last year, when their school was considering closing the girls hockey program. (Quick update: They've also reached their fundraising goal of $1000 this year!)

Team Representative Amy Babcock has seen firsthand just how much playing on the team has made a positive impact:

"Hockey has been such a fundamental part of their lives, and the memories they’ve shared with each other will last a lifetime. We live in such a small town, and football is such a huge part of our community, and the girls have a hard time competing with that.” 

These girls have experienced the agony of defeat, and the joy of winning together for the last nine years. It has been such a great part of their lives, and the memories they have made will stay with them once they move on to college.
